How do I know if I have a septic tank or treatment plant?
Start with property records, covers, service paperwork and the discharge route. Covers alone rarely prove the system type. A specialist can inspect accessible components and trace the outlet without anyone entering the chamber.
Can a septic tank discharge into a ditch?
In England, a septic tank must not discharge directly to surface water, and an existing one that does needs dealing with as soon as possible. A treatment plant may be able to discharge to surface water when all applicable rules or permit conditions are met. Natural Resources Wales also requires a package treatment plant for a discharge to a watercourse; Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own regulator routes.
How often should my tank be emptied?
England’s official guidance says sludge must be removed before it exceeds the tank’s capacity, and that this should be at least once a year or in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. SEPA also advises annual desludging. Occupancy, tank size and measured build-up can change the interval.
