Why tanks need desludging
Solids settle and scum accumulates while liquid passes onward. If too much material builds up, solids can leave the tank, damage the drainage field and cause blockage or pollution. Emptying does not fix a failed outlet or broken component.
Set the interval from evidence
Start with the manufacturer’s instructions and regulator conditions. Record occupancy and dates, and ask the contractor to note sludge condition or abnormal levels. Holiday lets, larger households and undersized systems may need more frequent attention.
Use the right contractor
Use an authorised or registered waste carrier and keep the receipt or transfer note. Make sure the vehicle can reach the cover without damaging the tank or drainage field.
Do not enter the tank, and do not leave an insecure cover unattended.
After the visit
Refit safe covers, record the date and note any defect the operator observed. If the tank refills unusually quickly, investigate groundwater entry, a blocked outlet or high water use rather than repeatedly pumping it out.

Does every tank need emptying once a year?
